[Dec 2023] Call for Submissions

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting submissions for essays to be published on the Mozhi website. We would love to receive

(a) essays on a particular writer, contextualising their place in the literary landscape of their chosen language

(b) essays on works from a particular language centred on a specific theme or idea (for eg., migration in modern Tamil literature)

(c) evolution of the literary landscape in a particular language—this can be holistic or limited to certain subthemes (such as diaspora writing)

(d) critical review of a translated work

We welcome pieces between 2,000 and 10,000 words.

*Please note that the language of the author or work(s) in question should be from a non-English Indian language.

**We encourage original writing on the above topics, but we especially value translations into English of essays previously authored in other Indian languages.

***If you think you have a compelling idea that doesn’t fit into any of these categories, write to us with a proposal containing an outline of your idea, a short bio of yours, and links to any previously published essays you’ve authored. Please send us your pitch on or before 15 January 2024

****Contributors whose essays are accepted for publication will be paid at the rate of INR 5 per word. In case the essay is translated, the payment will be split equally between the translator and the author/rights holder of the original article. Do note that we cannot make overseas payments, and therefore require you to have a bank account in India to receive payment in INR.

Please send your submissions to mozhispaces@gmail.com on or before 15 February 2024 with the subject line ESSAY SUBMISSION. Do note the following guidelines:

  • The submission must include the essay, and a brief bio of yourself.
  • The submission email must contain the essay and other details in one single word document, in any 12 point font, double spaced.
  • Additionally, if the essay is a translation, also include
    • A brief bio of the author
    • The text of the original article
    • Confirmation that you have permission to translate the essay. If your submission is accepted, we will require an email confirmation from the rights holder granting translation rights to you, and publication rights to Mozhi.
